Welcome!
My name's Dr Johanna Howes and I'm a science communicator, writer, digital content producer and undergraduate chemistry tutor. I studied Chemistry at the University of Technology Sydney and enjoyed it so much that I went on to complete an Honours thesis titled “An infrared spectroscopic study of forensic bone samples”. Still not done with research, I started a PhD project called “The biochemical energy balance of the coral symbiosis”, using my skills in chemistry to tackle the environmental disaster happening on the Great Barrier Reef. During this time, I discovered a love of communicating science and decided that, while research is important, instilling good understanding of science in the public is vital for research itself to be effective. And so I spent a year as a presenter with the Shell Questacon Science Circus, travelling around Australia and performing science shows for kids. I graduated with a Master of Science Communication (Outreach) with Commendation, from the Australian National University in 2016.
When I'm not setting things on fire or shooting marshmallows out of a vacuum cleaner for science, I enjoy adventuring, writing, reading and anything even remotely science fiction-related.
This website is an amalgamation of all of the different platforms I'm currently working on. You can find extras for my YouTube channel, updates on various different projects, links to freelance writing and heaps more.
