The Flame Challenge 2017 | What is energy?
At the beginning of 2016, I had the absolute privilege of meeting one of my heroes, Alan Alda.
...well I say "meet"... I really mean "got to sit 2 metres away from...". Potato, pot-ah-to.
Until his visit to ANU's Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, I had absolutely no idea Alda was even remotely interested in Science Communication. Turns out, he's had a long and distinguished career in disseminating science to the public. A few years ago, he started a competition called "The Flame Challenge". It's a call for scientists to try and explain complex, but foundational concepts like "What is sound?" or "What is sleep?" to eleven-year-olds. The competition is actually driven by 5th graders; not only do they pick the topic for the year, but they judge the winners.
So the aim is to present your entry in a way that's informative, engaging and easy to understand while not being condescending.
Here's my entry:
Have a watch and let me know what you think. Also make sure you check out some of the others - there are some crackers!
